Long time in between updates but the code is always being tweaked for my own use :P

updated NSIS installer for windows.
Explorer intergration back for windows users (is not removed by uninstall option currently).

Fixed nf_print displaying dir icon for blank message lines in the gui's hlist.

spaces short option was listed as "s" in cli help, its actually p - fixed.
included entrys in the killwords list with nasty characters were not being processed.
Escaped killword and special_casing array now stored in @main::kill_words_arr_escaped and @main::word_casing_arr respectively, rather than overwriting themselves solving this issue and a few others. added [Moonsong], Dvsky, aaf, sys to killword list

Well its been overdue for quite some time so here is 4.0.1b for linux and also packaged up for win32.

Sourceforge has a new layout and well, it was a massive pain in the arse. Im sure with a bit of tweaking it will be ok, but atm I prefer the old style one.

The win32 port has been done with strawberry perl, which i have to say is excellent. I am truly impressed, installing tk under strawberry perl was the first time I saw tk pass all its tests. Kudos to the strawberry perl team.

New Project
I have started work on a new project as well, it is called AU Big Fix. In short it currently fixes all known automatic update issues very easily. While I do despise windows for being a clunky piece of shit, I still have to support it unfortunately. No proper hosting / forums etc for it atm but below are some free host links for the rar.

4.0.1a - bit more polish on the CLI interface, thanks to John Tibbs for picking out the coding errors and typos I never manage to.

Ive been a bit quite on the updates for namefix.pl lately due to a new job which keeps me very busy (Systems Administrator for a Large International Mining Laboratory). I have also been house hunting and currently waiting for finance approval for the house I have made an offer on. Hopefully once Im in my new house I will be able to get more coding done and also resume my electronic projects.

Ive been rather busy with a new job, loving it to :)

I have also written another perl app that I will release when I cbf (media playing related). The app also needs some fine tuning yet.

Ubuntu dist upgrade to intrepid fucking ruined my pc. By ruined I mean, the yanking of binary legacy nvidia drivers. My main pc has been faithfully acting in its second roll as media pc. I run a matrox g550 for the desktop and my trusty old ASUS Nvidia TNT2 Ulta (reow). Needless to say, I was pissed - I had encountered the issue previously and managed to resolve it with a custom kernel compile. Not this time though, spent far to long trying everything else but a reinstall.
Having spent far to long avoiding a reinstall, i did it. Then noticed today my install.sh for namefix.pl was not correct. After fixing the stupid stuff I noticed that force install for cpan was no longer working (did it ever work ?). So I googled around, and found this great thread below with a guru giving out his fix.

namefix.pl 4.0.1 - CLI Returns

Welcome back to CLI mode which has been missing since version 2.0.
Its funny how things seem to come full circle, back in 2000 when I started this app it was a very simple command line tool that grew into a gui app. Now 8 years later the command line interface has been put back in. I never intended to take out the cli but I simply lost the 2.0 cli only code while I went mad learning to use the Tk widget set.

New CLI Features:

The new cli interface boasts nearly full access to namefix.pl options and once I am done it will have complete access.
Short and long style options are supported
Can save options as default from cli interface
Can output to a console (or gui if u want) html webbrowser using --html, defaults to elinks atm (extremely handy for id3 mode).

Notes:

The current options names are not set in stone, think of them as placeholders for better names which Im waiting on users like yourself to suggest.
HTML mode really does rock.

For all users running namefix.pl as a perl script (ie unix & osx) who encounter dependency issues try running these commands:

perl -MCPAN -we 'install "MP3::Tag"'
perl -MCPAN -we 'install "Tk"'
perl -MCPAN -we 'install "Tk::DynaTabFrame"'

Should these commands fail (Tk insists on passing all its tests, for namefix.pl 90% pass is more than enough most times) try force installing the modules:

perl -MCPAN -we 'force install "MP3::Tag"'
perl -MCPAN -we 'force install "Tk"'
perl -MCPAN -we 'force install "Tk::DynaTabFrame"'

On other news, I am slowly working on the namefix.pl cmd line options, if anyone has a copy of the old 2.0 cmd line version please email me. Please feel free to help with the options, Im still deciding on what letters will = what functions.

The initial cmd line version with use the following syntax:

namefix.pl -[options] [file/directory]

much like the original 1.0 and 2.0 versions, but once that has been sorted I will do a proper unix style namefix.pl:

namefix.pl -r --sp:spaces --case [file/directory]

This will come once Im happy with the cmd line code.

4.0 - finally

Well here it is, 4.0 in all its overdue glory.

I am finally happy enough with the code to call it a .0 , plus now my focus can shift to some of my 5.0 goals that have been long overdue. For starters I will be resurrecting the command line interface and implementing a gtk/qt3 gui (all depends on which one is the most portable and support by perl).

I will of course remake the win32 installer and package the source with the release. Its not high on my list of priorities but it will get done. If someone else would like to do it I would be very grateful.

reverted fn_readdir removal of '.' and '..' back to a for loop. I had not noticed but occassionally a dir will list a file before '.' and '..'. this leads to a file being omitted when I truncated the dir array by two. This was a very rare occuring bug that I thought I had allready squashed.

Done a lot of work since the last release, squashed all known bugs (that I can remember). The Block rename feature has become a real good feature for myself and a few other users I send WIP code to, I hope everyone else finds it as useful. I shall write up a tutorial on blockrename and post it somewhere permanent.

Turned out removing use of $_ was a lot more involved than I though, about 4-5 years ago I felt the most sane solution for dealing with perl find was to make fixname use $_ by default. I have since changed my view on the topic and done a lot of recoding to make fixname and all subs receive passed variables which is a much more common practice.

Enough drivel I suppose, here is the changelog (drivel in bullet point format):

4.0 RC12

blockrename filter now checks to see if a filter string has been entered (like main window)
a recursive list now uses the same format as preview and run
arrows only printed in hlist if text is a file.
rebuilt find_fix again, recursive renaming issues resolved. The problem was caused by find changing directory.
fixnames 1st plog was set to level 4 instead of 3, fixed.
fixname was still addressing $_, fixed
set escape_string to log level 5
filter is now a checkbutton, will not be enabled if there is no filter

Here it is, 4.0 RC11, heavily buffed & polished and closer to the elusive 4.0.
I decided to release it before I get to distracted with this other program Im writing at work. I think all that really remains before 4.0 (apart from cleaning up my own messy code) is a full test of recursive feature.

Notes:

I havent had time to fully test recursive renaming (itself and with the undo).
Still havent looked into the windows bug, mentioned in previous post, though I may have fixed it while sorting out another problem**.

Hey all, I have started checking out namefix.pl on win32 again. Might release a bin later on (we will see). Some issues have been encountered already though.

namefix.pl does not list correctly when working in the base dir of a drive ie f:/

Also thanks to this site here http://www.bribes.org/perl/ppmdir.html If it wasn't for the site, I probably would not bother with win32 as active perl has discontinued Tk in their repository.

Well I have broken my own release rules again and added several features. I felt these features are neccesary for the 4.0 vintage version Im aiming / hoping for.

No windows release atm, since I havent been coding much at all in win32 lately, I will make a release soon enough.

Of quick note there is a undo feature and also logging. I shall ramble on about the changes later as I am quite tired tonight. Here is the changelog.

4.0 RC9
* logging added and currently enabled by default, logs to ~/.namefix.pl/logfile.txt
debug level is set in global vars atm
* block rename: the original filename list is now editable.
why ?, so you can trim entrys you do not want renamed, if the file does not exist
it is just skipped. This was originally going to be buttons allowing top/bottom
entry to be deleted but I felt this was simpler if not elegant, (it was also very
easy todo).
* front & end append routines are run after all cleanups
* added kill patterns & kill common words routines to 2nd run like below
* replace/remove (same function) is run 2x, the 2nd run is just before final cleanups.
This should improve matching user entered words

OK, I know this review has been there for awhile on download.com but here is my retort.

Namefix.pl's no-frills interface is not particularly attractive, nor is it easy to grasp at first glance. Like similar renaming utilities, Namefix.pl offers several renaming options including the ability to remove, replace, or append characters; rename MP3 files based on ID3 tags; and modify character case. Also, it can clear symbols and digits from file names. You can filter files and folders, and preview before applying modifications.

Unlike similar apps, Namefix.pl doesn't have the capability to revert file names back to their originals. We also had a tough time learning how to operate certain features, including Scene, Padding, Enumerate, and Truncate options. A more comprehensive help file would've been better than the brief tool tips that are offered. The program claims integration with Windows, but this feature didn't materialize during testing."

OK, rather than my rant aimlessly I shall dissect this POS review.

So bitterness but no actually criticism *shrug*, I am more than open to suggestions but from my user base I get nothing but good reports.

Yes, its not 100% idiot proof. That is what the preview button is for which is auto enabled @ the start and after every run / preview. Post 4.0 will provide some minor undo functionality. Adding extra code to prevent DSO Errors isn't a top priority for me as it is incredibly boring and does not improve functionality.

I do find it strange the reviewer for download.com is quite possibly the most ignorant person to use my program ever. Lets take truncate, you can truncate from the front, middle or end of the file name (still with me ?) then you enter how many characters you would like to truncate, then (this is the hard bit) you click run (with preview mode enabled by default) to confirm that your options are going to provide the results you want. Again I have no problems with constructive criticisms but this read to me like a big old whinge.

Right click on a folder in explorer, click namefix.pl. Im sorry but this complaint really shat me off. Namefix.pl has had explorer (add konqueror) integration since the 1st GUI (there were a few releases where the reg file was not packed into the nsi installer - so sue me).

So in summation, while I do appreciate reviews I also appreciate it if the reviewer bothered to take more than 1 minute to use the program before slamming it. To all the software users and reviewers out there: Don't be shy, drop the programmer an email - you never now the feature you request may be one he just never thought off, program got a bug ? let him/her know as they may not have struck it themselves. Interface could be more intuitive ?, write and suggest how.

I for some reason get stuck on big version numbers, I insist in perfection for a .0 and well it rarely happens in my case. So 4.0 will be a Its good enough release, following 4.0 will be a slew of new features I plan to implement.

Well, despite my best intentions a new feature has made its way in.
new option = overwrite.

Overwrite as the name implies will not check to see if the destination filename exists before preforming the move. The option overwrite will never be save enabled, it is strictly a THIS SESSION ONLY option.

Its one of these things I never thought I would use but it came in very handy today. At work I use winamp + streamripper to make a nice quick mp3 collection. Now this particular stream I rip loves to put "requested by " on the title id3 tag, this in turn gets pushed to the filename through no fault of streamripper. Anyways, the overwrite option elegantly solves that issue for me, turn off general cleanup, set remove to "requested by .*" and replace with to ".mp3" and tada, no more double ups.

I will release RC7 shortly, Id like to knock off that .. bug before I do though.

Having found a little bit of spare time here and there I have been hunting down and fixing some little bugs. I have fixed "disable regexp" option from screwing with directory listings.

In between fixing little bugs I am also changing my code format slightly. Some sections of namefix.pl I havent touched in a few years so Im comming back upon some messy code I knowingly left for myself.

Im still pushing for a beautiful 4.0 release (ie 99.999999999% bugfree). Being a 1 man team, I dont have the spare time to develop 4.0 and 5.0 at the same time. So as much as I want to rock the boat Im going to grin and bear it (deal with convoluted directory listing methods).

The next planned bug to fix is to have ".." listed even when running a fixname, as its always going to be used regardless for directory browsing. I did think of just throwing in a "up 1 dir" button, but felt it would have been cheating.

Id like to know if any1 else has this same problem.
Goto File, Options, Advanced and untick disable regexp.
Then list current dir, for me it wasnt listing but running a preview would generate the list.

On another note Im giving serious thought to 5.0, plans include:

new ui toolkit, as nice as tk is to program with its just not supported well enough in perl anymore. So Im torn between gtk / qt. I have looked at wxwidgets but its not what I need / am after.
musicbrainz support, thanks amarok for giving me that idea ;)
mp3 tag guessing schema, another idea Ive gotten from amarok. This will allow guessing of album & year from directorys finally.
Unicode/UTF8 - Im hoping with an overhaul of all code I can sort out international character issues. Failing that a nice clean layout will make it easier for some1 familiar with Unicode/UTF8 to fix up my code.
Plugins, a plugin will simply be another tab added to the gui. The hope is people will be able to extend the functionality without impacting usability for newbs. Dont expect to see this feature for awhile gui and code overhaul must come first.

Noticed a few errors when tidying my mp3 collection the other day and fixed up some bugs.

ATM its just a source release, I will package it up for win32 later on. There are a few more little tweaks todo then who knows I might release 4.0 finally :P. As always feel free to send in bugfixes.

listing is now sorted case insensitively
filter now applies to dirs as well

Well i got stuck with the utf8 issues, but did add debug info so others can see where it is failing.
Im working on a newproject atm called WiiCR , its a media player solution for the nintendo Wii.

Plans for namefix.pl atm are to release 4.0 with debug info and no utf8 support. I will begin creating namefix-cli.pl that will use the 4.0 libs. The old cli version never had these issues with international characters so Im hoping that the cli ui (which is needed anyway) will narrow down the problem even more.

UTF8 issues

Well after months of no problems with international characters the shit finally hit the fan. I have finally managed to upset perl and tk and the result is international characters being garbled.

ATM Im currently adding a basic debug system to narrow down where UTF8 goes from being fine to fucked. It seems it only happens when perl makes a filesystem call on a string containing file name with international characters. -d. -f and rename all exhibit this problem which never before used to be an issue.

What I currently need is a definite routine to detect international strings, then once I can tell if I am dealing with a UTF8 string I can try to solve the renaming issue as well. Id really appreciate some input on the problem if any one out there has some good solid exp with perl + tk + utf8.

Well after copying nearly 40gig of vids off my mate I needed to give them a good cleanout, fortunately for me I found a few more things in need of tweaking.

4.0 RC4

dots2spaces wasnt working correctly with underscore set as space delimiter fixed.
Fixed previous version typo.
improved general cleanup yet again (wasnt properly cleaning if space delimiter was anything but space).
added some more tags to rm words list
manual rename updates the original filename when apply is pressed.
rm words wasnt correctly working on directories (fixed).
was still using $_ instead of $file in some places in fixname.pm (fixed)
When renaming directories general cleanup and rm words now work as expected.

Nearly there I reckon, but no point rushing it Id rather have 4.0 out next year than release it with annoying bugs / quirks.

Well I lost intrest in Neverwinter Nights about a week or 2 ago, for the time being (games rarely hold my atttention) and I have been going over the code with a fine tooth comb.

So many bug fixes etc, was going to release 3.95 as a in between but I was lazy and here we are now with 4.0 RC1 ready for use.

Its my pet peeve that other batch file renamer programs which have: less features than mine, 30 day timeouts or a price tag are all listed before namefix.pl in google when I search for "batch file renamer". Even adding free to the search string doesnt pull up namefix.pl on the 1st couple of pages.

So I ask you, my userbase to help namefix.pl climb the ranks in google. Id hate for some1 to purchase a competing program when mine is free.

Well I have fixed most of the lil bugs in namefix.pl. The last one todo is making directory browsing work with recursive listing mode.

Ive decided the 1st thing 5.0 will need is an option to cancel current listing, nf do weird things atm if u click list again while listings (nothing criticial, just mildly annoying). Being this close to a 4.0 release Im not adding any new features.

4.0 should be released in a week (unless Im more lazy than I expect).

Anyway updates include:

Simplified function names
Ability to set genre for all processed files
Ability to set year for all processed files
Manual rename has been fixed.
Year and Genre are editable on manual edit dialog.
The desired genre is selected from a combobox

The current list of genres is just a quick 1 I found with google intended for id3v1 if some1 has a complete list of genres for id3v2 please email it to me thanks.

Once 3.9 is released I will be doing a thorough inspection of the code, cleanout old redundant code, Break big sections off into their own pm file. Please once 3.9 is out send me any errors you do encounter and any suggestions for simplfing the function names anymore is weclome.

I have to say, with these newly added id3 options organizing my mp3 tags (something Im very fussy about) is now a breeze. Previously I used Amarok on linux, excellent media player which has similar functionality and before that xmms/ winamp which caused frequent RSI. The other problem I used to encouter was winamps id3v2 vs xmms's rather weak support, but no more thanks to namefix.pl treating id3v1 as the backup tag.

Stuff that will not make 4.0 are still planned features:

I had a recent request for the following feature "Music organizing, ie automatically creating directory structure and shifting music files to appropiate directory". While I would love to put this in for 4.0 its not really covered by namefix.pl's intended scope, meaning I feel it would be out of place in a batch file renamer. I do however plan to create an application that does just that as a complimenting program for namefix.pl after 4.0.

Bloody useless isp and transparent proxy server

Sorry for the lag in updates people, but unfortunately my isp http://amnet.com.au/ have been fucking around with the transparent proxy all week. Whats more annoying is my previous isp http://perthinternet.com (amnet bought them up) didnt have a TP enabled which made them an isp worth signing up with. So anyway after a whole week of piss poor internet service it seems to be working again, except Im unable to access www.blogger.com (Im using the neat app Tor atm to get here). I can access namefix.blogspot.com and beta.blogspot.com but no no not the 1 I need.

Transparent proxy: rather than have the option of recieving day old news and incorrect 404 errors via the isps webproxys cache relay its forced. Which means if your TP fucks up all web traffic is unacessible, rather than just changing proxy settings.

So in summary, amcom admins cant setup a transparent proxy to save their lifes and while unlikely they may have intentionally blocked my direct access to my blog (Ive dealt with petty isp's before *cough cough westnet.com.au cough*).

On another topic I have been using the "perl express" IDE and It has been a nice jump from programming in vi/ win32pad. My one gripe with the program is it wont jump to errors in my libs, only the main script file. If any1 knows of a better IDE for perl please let me know.

You can now rename a selection of files by entering a common part of the filenames.

attention makers of Quick File Rename v5.0 in reply to this claim:

"Full unicode support for international character sets, e.g Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Tamil, German, Russian, etc. Very cool! Currently this is only renaming application with such support."

namefix.pl has had unicode support for literally ages, Martin added it back in the 1.x days. It can also translate international characters to their english equivalent. According to reports it works fine for files with german, russian and korean characters. Ive yet to hear how it works with Japanese characters, I imagine it wouldnt work the best with kanji.

There are a limitations with perl/tk and unicode atm but nothing that stops namefix.pl renaming correctly. The only quirk i have seen to date is when displaying the renamed file a character will appear as ? in namefix.pl, rest assured the rename worked as expected.

Did some cosmetic tidy ups on the code, prolly do some serious updates later on today.

Ive had a few people email me saying why bother with id3, there are better apps etc etc.Quite annoying, as their assuming that every1 only uses namefix.pl for renaming mp3s. I would like to state for the record namefix.pl is probably the most feature full batch file renamer out there. It runs on all systems that perl/tk are supported on (Unix, Linux, Embedded Linux, *BSD, Mac OS, OSX, Win95/98/2000/xp/vista, etc). It only includes id3 support due to large amount of requests for it, so far Ive managed id3v1 support without making namefix.pl mp3 centric.

Incase some people still arent clear:

namefix.pl isnt just for renaming mp3s.
It will always support generic batch file renaming.
mp3 options will only be added if they dont interfere with generic renaming (is why id3 support was put off repeatedly until gui overhaul)
Accoustic fingerprinting will be added post 4.0 at a quick look its still not ready for mainstream usage).

And some other points I need to make:

dont write and complain about the use of free webhosts, unless your offering me stable webspace with my own login.
namefix.pl is pronounced "namefix dot P L"
I only want to hear about "competing" apps if they have a feature namefix.pl doesnt, In which case I will add the feature if usefull (dont tell me about acoustic fingerprinting FFS I know about that 1).

plan to finish reworking directory display code tomorrow, its a bit of a mess atm few display double ups on dirs. once fixed will enable double clicking on dir to shift to that dir (ala explorer).

Im also considering making the list button actually list the whole directorys contents rather than just displaying what media types in the current directory will/ might be renamed. Any feedback on this matter would be appreciated.

Ive also found a cool module for linux that replaces all tk widgets with qt widgets, as yet to try it but if it all works nicely it will be in 4.0.

prolly make an official release @ version 2.6, possible release tomorrow if Im happy with dir code.

The annoying flashing console is no more when typing in a dir location, unfortunatley so is tab completion but its not really needed thanks to a better dir dialog.

quick note: Ive noticed when using tab completion in 3.5 (directory location box), a console flashes up with each letter typed. Not sure why, Ive checked my code over and tried redirecting stdout and stderr to a log file with no luck. I think its caused by how it finds the contents of each directory (runs dir/ls/etc in a shell each time content changes and checks for files if any). Next release I will just remove the tab completion, its nice but to many quirks for what I need.

did a big cleanup of all the code today, its now nicely formatted and easy to read.

1 - have all fonts set via string variable, editable fonts.ini.txt
2 - sort fonts in linux
3 - update about box (resize pic and change layout).

1 being 1st on my list will be done tomorrow, editing fonts in txt file is only a stub till 4.0 and its only there for ppl on with dpi issues.

2 tk font size on windows and linux scale differently (pain in the arse), so naturally I have to work around it.

3 the current tabbed layout of the about box is the fruits of my 1st attempt at displaying a jpg in tk :P, will be much neater in 3.5.

well thats all for now, will release another version tomorrow night if all goes to plan.

3.1 was ready for release but skipped it to overhaul gui and add id3v1 support for up comming 3.5 release. 3.5 will no doubt be release shortly, all features I want in this version are done Im simply checking and double checking the code.

quick summary of changes since 3.0 to current:

* organized and cleaned all up all variables *phew*
* justified text in main in options window.
* changed routine for clear button, only clears input boxes & related check boxes.
* uses config file with version number in filename, easy way to introduce new
options. No need to check what version config file is anymore or worry about
conflict old/new option names.
